Are you sick and tired of the number of plastic bottles cluttering up your bathroom shelves and cabinet?

Do you quietly despair at the volume of disposable plastic that gets thrown into your rubbish bin (and not the recycle one) each week?

Then I can guarantee you are not alone. More and more of us are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental damaged caused by single use plastic. And happily, an ever-growing number of us are looking to make small, sustainable lifestyle changes to help reduce our consumption of disposable plastics.

One area of day to day life where it is reasonably easy to switch from highly packaged, plastic products, to eco-friendly, plastic-free alternatives is in the bathroom, and lucky for you we are on hand to help with a few suggestions.

Soap bars

Soap is making a comeback in a big way! Gone are the green, or white, bars of our childhood memories that smelt disturbingly like the washing up liquid. Soap has become artisan. Handmade soap bars are now widely available, in a vast array of colours, designs and fragrances. Browse our own range of over 70 different varieties here.

From brightly coloured soaps that would look great on many a bathroom or kitchen sink, to highly fragranced soaps to give your senses a boast in the morning shower or gentle moisturising soaps for those with sensitive skin. We even have soaps that can help relief certain skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis. Best of all, each bar is vegan friendly and entirely plastic-free.

Soap bags

Two problems people often have with soap are firstly, it’s a slippery little article and you can spend much of your shower, or bath, picking the bar up of the floor. Secondly it can turn mushy, or slimy, when left sitting in a pool of water and how annoying when it’s your favourite soap bar!

Two problems, one solution. A soap bag.

These really are shower time game changers. Made from eco-friendly, natural sisal, simply, pop a full-sized soap bar into the soap bag, close the drawstring and you are good to go. The soft weave of the bag feels great against skin and gently exfoliates like a loofah. Once you’ve finished washing, hang the bag to dry, out of water and no more mush.

Still not convinced about the merits of soap? No problem, why not try refillable shower crème?

Refillable shower creme, is a great way to begin a plastic-free journey. Simply add water to the shower crème powder, supplied in compostable sachets, to create a low lather, moisturising cleansing creme which is suitable for all the family, even those with sensitive skin types.

Shampoo and conditioner bars

Hair shampoo and conditioner bars are another great way of eliminating single-use plastic from your bathroom. Shampoo bars have been popular with backpackers and outdoors enthusiasts for years. As well as being convenient for travel, due to being small and compact, they are also great for the environment.

Shampoo bars are essentially the same as liquid shampoo, except the product is concentrated and packed into a bar form. This concentrated form means you typically need to use much less of the product, compared to liquid shampoos, making shampoo and conditioner bars a cost-effective option. Shampoo bars were actually the standard before bottled shampoos became popular in the 1940’s.

Shampoo and conditioner bars are formulated for all hair types and high-quality ones should work just as effectively as shampoo bottle varieties.

Our range of shampoo bars are all SLS and Paraben free (the harsh chemicals that can dry and damage hair).

Shaving bars

Solid shaving bars can be used by both men and women. They look and feel very much like a standard soap bar, but the lather that comes from a shaving soap is much thicker. Shaving soap lather is typically richer and deeper and provides increased hydration when compared to other shaving products, such as foams, creams and oils.

A shaving soap will also last much longer than a can of foam or a tub of cream.

Body lotion bars

Put simply, solid body lotion bars are just like liquid body lotions, or body butters, but with all the water removed. They might look small, as they are highly concentrated, but they pack a mighty punch.

Terrific, because that’s another single-use plastic bottle you no longer need. And the best bit? Because you apply the bar directly to your skin you use exactly the right amount of lotion. No waste!

All our solid body lotion bars are handmade in the UK and contain only 100% natural ingredients.

Exfoliating sugar scrub bars

If you like extreme exfoliation, then a sugar scrub bar could be just your ticket. Made with a cocoa butter base, for skin nourishment, and sugar granules to aid the removal of dead skin cells, these bars are as good as any liquid sugar scrub sold in bottle and tubs.

Deodorants

Switching from your usual deodorant to a bar, or tinned, alternative is maybe a move for only the brave and those very committed to a plastic-free lifestyle – although don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

However, a solid deodorant housed in a push-up paper tube, like those created by our friends Ben and Anna is much less of a departure from your high street roll-on deodorants.

Vegan friendly and made with 100% natural ingredients these really do offer a great plastic-free alternative, helping you to do your bit for the environment and smell great at the same time.

Bath bombs, bath salts, bath soak, bath melts

When it comes to bath -time, bath bombs are the perfect plastic-free alternative to bubble bath, as long as you are careful to buy them naked and not shrink-wrapped.

Bath salts and bath soak are now widely available in glass, re-useable, jars and if bath oil is your thing, why not try a bath melt, a solidified form of bath oil. Made with essential oils and all the luxury of a liquid bath oil but none of the wasteful plastic.

Bamboo toothbrushes and cotton buds

Millions of toothbrushes and plastic cotton buds are needlessly ending up in landfill and the ocean each year. The answer to this problem is bamboo alternatives. Bamboo is the world’s fastest naturally renewing resource and is also inherently anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.

Bamboo toothbrushes and cotton buds take approximately 6 months to biodegrade and offer a great way to cut down on your daily plastic consumption.
